Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry on Sunday said that the United Nations plays a crucial role in alleviating the suffering of the Palestinian people, namely the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) and the World Food Program (WFP).

Shoukry, while addressing a joint press conference with Secretary-General of the United Nations António Guterres following talks at the premises of the Foreign Ministry in the New Administrative Capital (NAC), hailed the stance of the UN secretary general regarding the unprecedented condition in the Gaza Strip where the death toll has surpassed 32,000, in addition to the injured people and those who are suffering starvation.

The top Egyptian diplomat praised cooperation between Egypt and the UN, highlighting Guterres’ visit to Rafah Border Crossing on Saturday.

He added that: ‘The speech of Guterres was crystal clear regarding responsibility of what has happened. His speech represents principles and values of the Charter of the Unit
ed Nations.’

Guterres, meanwhile, emphasized that Egypt is one of the world’s pillars of peace, saying that his visit to Cairo was an opportunity to meet President Abdel Fattah El Sisi and the foreign minister to discuss a set of pivotal topics, in particular the situation in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.

In the same context, Secretary General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres stated that ‘outside the borders, there are blocked aid trucks.’

Guterres underscored that the United Nations would continue to support Palestinians. As for allegations of Hamas infiltration of UNRWA, he said that that investigations would be carried out to ensure alignment with UN values.

The UN secretary general stressed that “the war is Gaza should not distract us from what is happening in Sudan…I was moved by listening to their heartbreaking stories.’

In that framework, Guterres thanked Egypt for receiving almost 500,000 Sudanese since the outbreak of the civil war in April 2023 in addition to the five million that had
already been living in the country.
