The Director of the Umm Qasr district in Basra, Saleh Abdul Mahdi, confirmed today that the United Nations committed Iraq in the past period to removing buildings in the district, including the Naval Base neighborhood, which was part of the agreement signed by the former regime.

Abdul Mahdi said in a press statement, "There is an issue that is being raised now, which is the demarcation of the borders between Iraq and Kuwait. There is a residential neighborhood adjacent to the border strip with this demarcation and it is within Iraqi territory, and the border demarcation agreement between the two countries obliges Iraq to give 500 meters of border restrictions within Iraqi territory." Accordingly, an agreement was reached between the Iraqi and Kuwaiti governments, and in order to provide alternatives for citizens, a housing complex was built for them within Iraqi territory, and that the complex is now complete and there are procedures for Iraq to implement its obligations towards this agreement.

Abdul-Mahdi stressed, "The role that will be removed is not as some people imagine that the current government of Iraq will cede its lands to Kuwait, but these lands will remain within our lands, but they are among the international taboos."

The Director of the Umm Qasr district denied the existence of any protests in the district as reported on social media, stressing, "The security situation is stable in the district.
