Tripoli: Representatives of the Tebu community expressed concern about their limited representation in political institutions during a meeting with Khoury. The Tebu representatives highlighted the need for stronger political participation and representation in decision-making structures at both local and national levels.
According to Libyan News Agency, the meeting took place on Monday between the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ms. Stephanie Khoury, and a 12-member Tebu delegation. This delegation included political, legal, and tribal figures, members of social councils, representatives of youth and women, and civil society activists, reflecting the Tebu community’s engagement in shaping Libya’s future.
The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) reported that during the meeting, Khoury reviewed the key points of the political roadmap aimed at leading the country toward national elections and unifying institutions. These steps are considered pivotal for concluding the transitional phase. Khoury also emphasized the need for all cultural components to participate effectively in the political process, reinforcing that every Libyan must feel part of the country’s future.
Delegation members shared their views on the future of the political process and discussed issues related to organizing elections and completing the constitution as part of the efforts to end the transitional phase in Libya. They stressed the importance of involving all components in the political process. One speaker noted, “Our representation is not a privilege, but a fundamental right and an integral part of any fair and inclusive political process,” suggesting the establishment of a communication and coordination mechanism between UNSMIL and the Tebu community.
A civil society representative called for a clear space for cultural components in Libya, requesting UN support to open such avenues. According to the mission’s publication, participants underscored the need for effective participation of cultural components in constitutional, electoral, and institutional processes, emphasizing their integration into the national political dialogue.
The mission also noted that a participant delivered a speech in the Tebu dialect at the end of the meeting, showcasing Libya’s cultural richness. Khoury expressed her intention to visit southern communities again to listen directly to residents and understand their priorities and needs.
