Tripoli: The European Union has reaffirmed its commitment to backing the United Nations’ roadmap and supporting the democratic process in Libya. In a meeting held on Wednesday in Tripoli, Abdullah Al-Lafi, the Deputy Chairman of the Presidential Council, and Nicola Orlando, the Head of the European Union Delegation to Libya, discussed the latest political and security developments in the country and strategies to bolster the UN-led roadmap spearheaded by the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations.
According to Libyan News Agency, Orlando expressed his satisfaction with the meeting through a tweet on his official account. He highlighted that the discussions entailed a comprehensive review of the current developments and explored the best mechanisms to support UN efforts aimed at ending the division and achieving significant progress on the political front.
During their talks, both parties underscored the importance of all Libyan factions supporting the facilitation efforts of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL). They emphasized working seriously and effectively to ensure the roadmap’s success, cautioning against any unilateral actions that could jeopardize the country’s unity.
Orlando urged all Libyan parties to engage constructively with the Special Representative of the Secretary-General. He emphasized the European Union’s unwavering commitment to supporting Libya’s democratic process and expressed readiness to collaborate with all responsible stakeholders to help reunify civilian and military institutions.
At the meeting’s conclusion, both sides concurred on the necessity of ongoing consultation and coordination in the coming months. Orlando described these months as “important,” considering regional and international efforts to support Libya’s stability and restore its unity.
