Morocco Bests Argentina 2-1 in Thrilling End-To-End Olympic Soccer Opener


Saint-Etienne – Morocco beat Argentina 2-1 at Saint-Etienne’s Geoffroy-Guichard stadium on Wednesday, marking the first day of Group B action in the men’s Olympic soccer tournament at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The match was interrupted after Argentina scored a second goal, ultimately ruled out as offside at the restart almost two hours later.

Morocco’s Soufiane Rahimi opened the scoring in the 45+2nd minute with a finely executed goal, thanks to an elegant assist from Bilal El Khannouss. Rahimi continued his impressive performance by netting a second goal for Morocco from the penalty spot in the 50th minute.

Argentina’s first goal came from Giuliano Simeone in the 68th minute. Cristian Medina scored Argentina’s second goal in added time (90+16), after which total confusion resulted in the match’s supension.

Nearly two hours later, the two teams returned to the pitch and the second Argentine’s goal was ruled out following a VAR check.

Morocco is in Group B with Argentina, Iraq and Ukraine, Atlas Cubs’
next opponents on Saturday in Saint-Etienne.
