Tripoli: Presidential Council member Musa Al-Koni has urged Council President Mohammed Al-Menfi to expedite the creation of the High Commission for National Reconciliation, as outlined in the political agreement, to transform reconciliation into a comprehensive national process, independent of individual approaches or restricted roles.
According to Libyan News Agency, Al-Koni, in a letter to Al-Menfi, emphasized that accelerating the Commission’s establishment would build trust among Libya’s societal components and grant the Presidential Council broad national legitimacy to manage the reconciliation file. This is crucial for safeguarding the process from political interpretations or potential alignments.
He highlighted that due to the social and political complexities of the reconciliation file, it must be managed collectively and participatorily, avoiding reduction to individual interpretations that lack institutional consensus within the Council. It should be based on consensus among members representing Libya’s three regions, adhering to the partnership spirit upon which the Council was established.
Al-Koni noted that advisory or supportive roles in this context would have a more significant positive impact if conducted within a clear institutional framework and under the planned commission’s supervision. This approach ensures effort integration, preventing initiatives from being burdened with dimensions beyond the national reconciliation goal.
He clarified that the Libyan Political Agreement, governing the Presidential Council’s operations, explicitly mandates the establishment of a High Commission for National Reconciliation. This commission should reflect a balanced representation of Libya’s three regions, acknowledging the country’s social and geographical diversity.
Al-Koni concluded by asserting that the success of national reconciliation is not gauged by its speed but by its ability to accommodate diverse national sensitivities, bolster regional and international confidence, maintain internal stability, and secure social base support, all within a purely Libyan and stable framework.
