Tripoli, 25 December 2022 (Lana) – The USA has said that ‘the Libyan people deserve a united, democratically elected government that can rule for the interest of the whole country and its people, as well as a legislative body with a renewed mandate’.
It stressed the importance of holding free, fair, transparent and inclusive presidential and parliamentary elections as soon as possible across the country as it is” clear demand and desire of the Libyan people”.
This came in a statement published by US embassy in Libya, Saturday, on its Facebook account, during which it congratulated Libya on its independence day, which falls on December 24 .
The US embassy statement called on all Libyan actors and key actors to work with the UN envoy Abdoulaye Bathily through settlement and constructive engagement, to fulfill their responsibilities towards the Libyan people in order to achieve long-term stability, security and prosperity.
The United States affirmed its readiness “to work with all parties to support these goals and efforts of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General Bathily.
The statement also called on all actors, including the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the High Council of State, to meet under the auspices of the United Nations to quickly agree on a constitutional basis.”
The statement concluded by saying, “If the two institutions cannot quickly reach an agreement on a fair electoral roadmap, alternative mechanisms can and should be used to adopt a constitutional basis for the elections. At the same time, we also are committed to supporting inclusive Libyan dialogue under the auspices of the United Nations.”
