Tripoli: The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has organized a specialized workshop via videoconferencing to empower Libyan journalists and media professionals. This initiative aims to enhance their research and news verification skills through artificial intelligence tools as part of the “Basirah” professional development program for journalists.

According to Libyan News Agency, the workshop featured participation from fifty journalists and media professionals from various regions of Libya, including twenty women, as well as professors and media students. The session was led by Pamela Kesrouani, a teaching fellow at the Google News Initiative for the Middle East and North Africa.

The mission introduced a set of AI tools developed by Google, such as NotebookLM and PinPoint, designed to accelerate research and information verification processes. The workshop also highlighted the Fact Check Explorer, a tool that allows journalists to verify news authenticity by accessing reports from independent fact-checking organizations globally.

Additionally, the workshop covered the use of Gemini software, which automates routine tasks like translation, transcription, dubbing, and machine translation. These tools aim to enhance media efficiency and contribute to improving content quality.

This workshop is a part of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya’s ongoing efforts to boost the capacities of journalists and media professionals, enabling them to tackle modern professional challenges with the latest digital technologies.
