Tripoli: The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has welcomed the transfer of Khaled Mohamed Ali Al-Hashri from Germany to the International Criminal Court’s detention center in The Hague. His recent appearance before the court marks a pivotal step towards achieving justice and accountability for numerous victims of serious human rights violations in Libya.

According to Libyan News Agency, Al-Hashri is suspected of being involved in crimes against humanity and war crimes, including murder, torture, rape, and sexual violence, in Libya between February 2015 and early 2020. UNSMIL emphasized the importance of this development in a statement, underscoring the need for justice for the many innocent victims affected by these violations.

The mission has called upon Libyan authorities and all UN member states to fully cooperate with the International Criminal Court (ICC). This cooperation should be in line with the Security Council resolution that refers to the situation in Libya, including ensuring full access for ICC investigators and executing outstanding arrest warrants. UNSMIL reiterated that accountability for mass atrocities is essential for achieving sustainable peace in the region. The mission also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Libya’s efforts to promote human rights and end impunity.
