Tripoli: The Ministry of Water Resources of the Government of National Unity is evaluating UNESCO's offer to provide technical support to Libya in the field of dam monitoring and maintenance. This consideration comes as part of efforts to enhance the country's infrastructure and mitigate risks associated with floods and natural disasters.

According to Libyan News Agency, the Ministry recently discussed a project submitted by the UNESCO Regional Office for the Maghreb countries, through the National Commission for Education, Culture and Science. The initiative aims to offer technical support to Libya, focusing on the assessment and rehabilitation of several dams. This project is expected to play a crucial role in reducing the risks of natural calamities by ensuring the structural integrity of the dams.

The Ministry's team, alongside a national expert contracted by UNESCO, collaborated with the UNESCO Regional Office to deliberate on various aspects of the project. Discussions included the implementation plan, necessary procedures, equipment requirements, the composition of the work team, and the project's timeline. These elements are crucial to ensure the effective execution of the initiative.

During the meeting, the national expert delivered a comprehensive presentation outlining the project's objectives, implementation methods, deliverables, and the proposed work plan, emphasizing the schedule for implementation. This presentation was aimed at providing clarity on the project's scope and expected outcomes.

The meeting also saw the participation of a Natural Resources Officer from the UNESCO Regional Office, the Head of the UNESCO Division at the National Commission for Education, Culture and Science, and the Head of the Eastern Water Region, who joined remotely. This diverse participation underscores the collaborative effort involved in the project's planning stages.

At the end of the meeting, the observations made by the Ministry's team regarding the proposed technical support were documented. These observations will be further discussed in detail at a future meeting to ensure a comprehensive understanding and agreement on the project's direction.
