Tripoli: The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) convened a meeting of the Disarmament, Demobilization, and Reintegration (DDR) Working Group in Tripoli last Sunday. This meeting saw the participation of several international partners, the Libyan National Security Council, and a local mediator. The focal point of the discussion was community security, stability priorities, and the unification and reform of Libya's security sector.

According to Libyan News Agency, UNSMIL shared details on its official Facebook page on Wednesday, outlining the meeting's discussion on implementing the National Security Council's vision. This vision is part of a comprehensive plan to mitigate community violence. The meeting highlighted practical measures including local mediation initiatives, early warning systems, and preventive strategies to safeguard civilians and critical infrastructure. Additionally, there was an emphasis on countering hate speech and disinformation.

The participants underscored the necessity of enhancing coordination among Libyan security, judicial, and community institutions. They also discussed the ongoing support for national efforts aimed at unifying the military and security sectors, ensuring stability, protecting civilians, and fostering social cohesion.

The DDR Working Group functions as a technical coordination and advisory platform. It supports national efforts to address the challenges posed by armed groups and societal violence, with the objective of promoting long-term stability and security sector reform. This initiative aims to strengthen national ownership while consolidating security, stability, and national cohesion.
