Tripoli: Libyan cities, particularly Tripoli, are currently facing a severe energy crisis characterized by frequent power outages, a recurring issue known locally as load shedding. These interruptions, which had seen some improvement over the past two years, have intensified this summer, dashing hopes for relief after prolonged hardships.
According to Libyan News Agency, the situation has deteriorated with the onset of summer, as rising temperatures and increased humidity have nullified earlier promises to enhance power generation capacity. Despite significant investments and assurances to alleviate the situation, power cuts in certain cities and regions now exceed eight hours daily. This has led to widespread frustration among citizens, particularly affecting vulnerable groups such as the sick, elderly, and children.
Complaints are mounting over what is perceived as the General Electricity Company's unfair distribution of electricity loads between cities and regions. This measure, intended to prevent the national grid from collapsing, has fueled resentment towards the company in affected areas. The company, despite receiving substantial financial backing over the years, blames its inability to resolve the energy crisis on multiple factors, including the deteriorating state of the power grid, rising consumption, and acts of sabotage, looting, and theft of electrical wires. Additional contributing factors include shortages of gas and fuel, as well as humidity and rough seas.
The extended power outages have sparked anger and frustration across the west, east, and south of Libya, impacting not only daily life but also causing financial losses for private businesses such as shops, bakeries, workshops, farms, and gas stations. Moreover, these outages result in inadequate water supply. In response, the company has launched awareness campaigns to curb electricity consumption, which has surpassed 7,000 megawatts, according to their data. A survey conducted by the Libyan News Agency revealed that many residents in Tripoli and other areas are disheartened by the persistence of the electricity crisis this summer and the inability to find a lasting solution.
Residents continue to question when the electricity crisis will be resolved. The prolonged power cuts, exacerbated by fluctuating temperatures, have intensified the suffering and frustration of citizens. Despite substantial financial investment and consistent payment of electricity bills, which have bolstered the company's revenue, the public remains dissatisfied with the lack of progress in addressing the outages and alleviating their ongoing hardship.
