New york: Libya cannot tolerate any delay in implementing the roadmap launched by the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) last August, stated Hannah Tetteh, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Libya. Tetteh emphasized this point during a regular briefing to the UN Security Council, urging the Libyan House of Representatives and the High Council of State to expedite their responsibilities in completing the initial phases of the roadmap.

According to Libyan News Agency, Tetteh announced her intention to request nominations from Libyan parties this October for participation in a structured dialogue process that UNSMIL plans to organize soon. The first achievement of the roadmap, she highlighted, is the agreement to establish the High National Elections Commission through joint appointments by the House of Representatives and the High Council of State for vacant sovereign positions. This agreement was reached by the Sovereign Positions Committee on October 4 and approved by the heads of both councils, Aguila Saleh and Mohamed Takala.

Tetteh underscored the necessity for international and regional backing to move forward with the roadmap’s implementation, aiming for results in Libya. She also noted the mission’s efforts in collaboration with national and international stakeholders to advance the political process in Libya and welcomed commitments from leaders supporting the new roadmap proposed by UNSMIL.

The mission will seek nominations from various Libyan institutions and entities to ensure broad inclusion, aiming for representation of all groups while considering technical expertise and maintaining a minimum of 35% female representation. Tetteh pointed out that tensions in western Libya, particularly in Tripoli, have eased due to local and international mediation efforts, including the involvement of the Turkish government.
