Tripoli: The Foreign Ministry of the Government of National Unity held discussions with its British counterpart about resuming consular operations in Tripoli. Abu Bakr al-Tawil, Director of the European Affairs Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, met with Owen Jenkins, Director-General for the Indo-Pacific, Middle East, and North Africa at the British Foreign Office, to address the potential for reopening the consular section at the British Embassy in the Libyan capital.
According to Libyan News Agency, the meeting highlighted the strong bilateral relations between Libya and the United Kingdom, with an emphasis on the support the UK provides to the political process in Libya. The Director of the European Affairs Department expressed appreciation for the UK’s important role.
The British official acknowledged the Government of National Unity’s contributions to promoting stability and development in Libya. The discussions included overcoming challenges faced by Libyan citizens in obtaining British visas and the possibility of lifting the ban on Libyan civil aviation. Efforts by relevant authorities in London were noted as ongoing.
The meeting also explored ways to strengthen bilateral relations across various sectors to benefit both nations. The discussions included evaluating the outcomes of Hamish Falconer’s recent visit to Libya, the Minister of State for the Middle East and North Africa at the British Foreign Office.
