Tripoli: The Women and Children's Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives, headed by Intisar Shneib, has issued a stark warning about the increasing cases of violence against children. Shneib highlighted that this trend, whether it is physical, psychological, or any other form of abuse, poses a significant threat to society as a whole, not just to the individuals directly affected.

According to Libyan News Agency, Shneib stated in a statement that "violence against children is a fully-fledged crime that cannot be justified under any social or cultural circumstances." She stressed the importance of not dismissing these crimes as mere "family matters," as doing so could lead to their continuation and normalization.

Shneib further elaborated on the responsibilities of protecting children, framing it as a national, religious, moral, and legal obligation. She announced the formation of a specialized committee tasked with drafting legislation aimed at combating domestic violence. This legislation is intended to create a clear legislative framework to criminalize such practices, protect victims, and enhance the state's role in prevention and intervention.

In her appeal, Shneib called for the enforcement of existing laws and the tightening of penalties for those who perpetrate violence against children. She also emphasized the need for safe reporting and protection mechanisms. Shneib pointed out the crucial roles of legislative, executive, and security entities, along with the media, educational, and religious institutions, in breaking the silence, exposing violations, and raising awareness about children's rights.

Concluding her remarks, Shneib stated, "Children are not only the weakest link, but also a mirror of society's conscience. What is happening today requires serious attention before these crimes become a phenomenon that threatens social peace."
