Al-Maqrif proposes salary-tax to fund school meals

Tripoli- Minister of Education of Government of National Unity, Musa al-Maqrif, proposed a national-tax on salaries similar to the jihad and insurance levy, called the school meals tax, to fund school meals, in order for this project to endure.

In his speech during the launch of the awareness campaign on the importance of school meals, Al-Maqrif explained, that his ministry is seeking to launch a special fund for school meals, with the participation of everyone from civil society organizations and international organizations, and the allocation of a special budget from the state.

He stressed that the social and health impact of healthy school meals has implications for students’ learning as it helps them to focus better and grow.

Al-Maqrif recalled in his speech that Libya was one of the pioneers of school feeding programme in the world, noting that the school feeding programme for the different stages of education in Libya was introduced in the 1950s and continued until early 1970s.
