Tripoli: The Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Government of National Unity, Taher Al-Baour, participated today via video conference in the 165th regular session of the Council of the League of Arab States at the ministerial level. The meeting focused on crucial issues impacting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of several Arab nations.
According to Libyan News Agency, the agenda for the session included two pivotal topics: the ongoing attacks challenging the sovereignty of various Arab nations and the nomination process for a new Secretary-General of the League of Arab States. In his address, Al-Baour reaffirmed Libya's unwavering support and full solidarity with countries including the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the State of Kuwait, the State of Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, the Kingdom of Bahrain, the Sultanate of Oman, the Republic of Iraq, and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. He emphasized Libya's rejection of any violations against their sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Al-Baour further highlighted the necessity of respecting the sovereignty and independence of all states and called for strict adherence to the principles outlined in international charters. These principles include non-interference in internal affairs and the resolution of disputes through peaceful means. He reiterated Libya's backing for regional efforts focused on peaceful dispute resolution, especially those based on dialogue and negotiation.
During the meeting, participants also discussed the nomination of a new Secretary-General for the League of Arab States, who is set to assume office on July 1, 2026, succeeding the current Secretary-General, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, whose term ends on June 30.
The session concluded with a declaration condemning any violations that undermine the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Arab states. The declaration stressed the importance of adhering to international law and the principles of good neighborliness and emphasized the need for peaceful dispute resolution to enhance security and stability in the region.
