Tripoli: Political activist Al-Mahdi Abdel-Aati, who had been detained since March 18, was released this evening. Al-Mahdi Abdel-Aati announced his release on his personal Facebook page, stating, "Praise be to God, I announce that I was released today at 4:30 PM Tripoli time. I am in good health, at peace, and in high spirits."
According to Libyan News Agency, Al-Mahdi Abdel-Aati expressed his gratitude to everyone who supported him during his detention, with special thanks to his family and friends who stood by him unwaveringly. He also acknowledged the efforts of the Public Prosecutor's Office, the United Nations Mission, the European Union Mission, and Libyan national forces for their solidarity and contribution to upholding justice.
In his statement, he appreciated the bloggers, media outlets, and public opinion pages for their advocacy campaigns, emphasizing the importance of supporting freedom of expression and preserving the dignity of his family in the Libyan context.
The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), the European Union Mission in Libya (EUMISS), and national human rights organizations had previously called for the immediate release of Al-Mahdi Abdel-Aati. They viewed his arrest and detention as a violation of Libyan laws and international human rights obligations, highlighting that such incidents are part of a common pattern among the country's security and law enforcement agencies.
