Tripoli: The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has expressed its concern regarding statements from certain Libyan political figures that seem to encourage not only demonstrations but also illegal acts against UN personnel and property. In a statement, the mission emphasized the legitimate right to peaceful demonstration, underscoring its full respect for citizens’ rights to express their opinions freely.

According to Libyan News Agency, the mission reiterated its commitment to direct communication with the Libyan people, highlighting that engaging in dialogue and understanding the concerns of peaceful demonstrators is central to its activities. The mission reported having witnessed numerous demonstrations outside its headquarters and has consistently engaged with demonstrators, including a recent meeting with representatives to discuss their demands and concerns openly.

The statement from the mission highlighted concerns over incitement and rumors, suggesting these could be attempts to disrupt progress towards initiating a political process aimed at national elections and unifying Libyan institutions for lasting peace and stability. The mission reminded all parties of their commitment to peaceful demonstration and resolving disputes through dialogue, while also reaffirming its adherence to international agreements protecting UN premises and personnel.

The mission concluded by urging respect for UN premises and assets in line with international law and reiterated its dedication to supporting a Libyan-led political process. The UN mission remains vigilant in monitoring developments and is committed to working for the benefit of all Libyans.
