Geneva, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet on Wednesday urged Libya’s unity government and European Union countries to act to protect migrants crossing the Mediterranean Sea for Europe, calling for urgent reform of current practices on search and rescue policies.

The Italian Aki news agency quoted Bachelet as saying on the eve of publishing of the report of UNHCHR on the matter on Wednesday ‘it is tragic that much of the suffering and deaths across the Mediterranean can be prevented … we may all agree that nobody should feel they were compelled to risk their lives on unsuitable boats in search for peace and dignity.’

‘But the answer can not be merely to prevent the migration boats from leaving Libya, which could make the travel of these more desperate and dangerous, she said.
