UN Envoy Highlights Need for Amendments in Libyan Electoral Laws

Benghazi: UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Libya, Hanna Tetteh, emphasized the need for the House of Representatives (HoR) and High Council of State (HCS) to proceed with the necessary amendments to the electoral laws to facilitate national inclusive elections. This statement was made during her meeting with Gen. Saddam Haftar in Benghazi, where they discussed the UNSMIL’s proposed political roadmap towards national elections and unified institutions, including security and military institutions.

According to Libyan News Agency, the discussion underlined the significance of modifying the current electoral framework to enable national elections. Gen. Saddam Haftar reaffirmed the General Command’s dedication to peaceful political solutions that would conclude the transitional period and lead to inclusive elections and unified institutions. This commitment was further communicated through a tweet by UNSMIL.

The meeting also addressed the humanitarian and refugee response in Libya. Gen. Saddam Haftar provided insights into the Libyan National Army’s efforts to support the voluntary return of Sudanese refugees, reflecting ongoing initiatives to address the refugee situation in the country.
