Tripoli: U.S. Senior Advisor for Arab and African Affairs Massad Boulos emphasized the role of Libyans in determining the specifics of a unification agreement, highlighting that the U.S. initiative is aimed at supporting Libyan-led efforts for peace and national elections. Boulos clarified that this initiative is inclusive, ensuring balanced representation for all stakeholders across various regions and cities.
According to Libyan News Agency, Boulos, in a tweet following an interview with Al-Hadath, outlined the steps taken since July 2025 by the United States and Libyan parties, including the establishment of a unified national budget and the joint FLINTLOCK 26 military exercises led by AFRICOM, which saw participation from forces throughout the country.
Boulos acknowledged the significant role played by international partners such as Trkiye, Egypt, Italy, France, Jordan, the UAE, Qatar, among others, while reiterating that the responsibility for any unification agreement ultimately lies with the Libyans themselves.
He further explained that the short-term U.S. initiative is designed to complement the medium- and long-term strategies of UNSMIL and SRSG Hanna Tetteh. Boulos affirmed that the United States remains committed to aiding the Libyan people, who have endured 15 years of conflict and division.
