Ankara: Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has expressed concerns that escalating armament in the Middle East and the Asia-Pacific region could push the world dangerously close to the brink of a global crisis. Speaking at the TRT World Forum, Fidan emphasized the geopolitical challenges posed by the current international system, which he says is fraught with political, military, economic, and environmental issues.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, Fidan highlighted the growing polarization within the international system, which he believes is leading to the formation of new alliances and consequently weakening global security structures. He warned that the intensifying armament in the Middle East and Asia-Pacific regions might not only push the world to the edge of a crisis but could also escalate into a nuclear conflict.
Fidan pointed out that the global community is grappling with two conventional wars, affecting international stability. He underscored Turkey’s strategic position amidst these con
flicts and emphasized its pivotal role in promoting regional peace and stability. Establishing stability in regions such as Syria, Iraq, the South Caucasus, the Eastern Mediterranean, and the Black Sea remains a key priority for Turkey, he noted.
The Turkish Foreign Minister criticized the current international system’s inability to secure peace, stability, justice, and equality. He cited the deadlock within the United Nations Security Council as a prime example of this failure. Fidan called for reforms to strengthen multilateral institutions across political, security, judicial, financial, and economic domains, urging accountability and Turkey’s support for initiatives aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of regional and international organizations.
Fidan also addressed the ongoing conflict in Gaza, describing it as a significant indication of the international system’s legitimacy crisis. He accused Israel of daily violations of international law, stating that over 44,000 Palestinians have been killed in G
aza. Additionally, he condemned the Israeli aggression targeting UN agencies, humanitarian organizations, and journalists, highlighting the broader risks posed to global stability.
