Tunis: After its spread in southern Libya, Tunisia mobilizes to combat desert locusts in the Dhehiba region. The Tunisian Ministry of Agriculture announced the entry of groups of desert locusts into the Dhehiba region of Tataouine Governorate in the south of the country, following southerly winds.
According to Libyan News Agency, the ministry stated that technical teams from the ministry had arrived at the site and determined that the groups of locusts were not in the form of swarms and currently do not pose a threat to the vegetation in the region. The ministry further explained that these teams are conducting a comprehensive survey across the region to monitor locust movements.
The ministry emphasized that all stakeholders at both central and regional levels have been mobilized to remain vigilant and intensify the treatment campaign against the pest. Equipment, spraying machines, and pesticides have been dispatched to tackle the locusts that have entered Tunisian territory.
It was confirmed by the ministry that the Sahel and North African regions are experiencing a widespread locust infestation. Libya, in particular, is currently facing a surge in locust numbers due to favorable conditions for locust reproduction, including recent rainfall and the abundance of green vegetation.
