Sudanese Displacement Intensifies as Clashes Escalate

Tripoli: The recent surge in violence between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has forced approximately 1,000 Sudanese to seek refuge in Libya, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the border triangle area. This mass displacement is a direct result of ongoing clashes that have destabilized the region where Sudan, Egypt, and Libya intersect.

According to Libyan News Agency, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported on Wednesday that over 4,000 Sudanese have been internally displaced within the Northern State of Sudan. The IOM’s field teams have confirmed that 4,278 individuals were displaced between June 15 and 17 alone, highlighting the severity of the conflict and its impact on civilians.

The IOM further detailed that approximately 950 people have crossed into Libya to escape the violence, as tensions and displacement continue to rise in the area. The conflict, which erupted in April 2023, has had devastating consequences, with over 20,000 fatalities and around 15 million people displaced or becoming refugees, as reported by the United Nations and local authorities. Additionally, research from American universities suggests that the death toll could be as high as 130,000, indicating the dire need for international intervention and aid.
