Shukri and Batili discuss developments related to the political solution in Libya

Cairo- The Egyptian Foreign Minister, Sameh Shoukry, discussed today, Tuesday in Cairo, with the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, Abdullah Batili, ways to advance the peace process in Libya.

The official spokesman for the Egyptian Foreign Ministry, Ambassador “Ahmed Abu Zeid,” stated that the meeting dealt with a lengthy discussion on developments related to the political solution in Libya.

He added that the Egyptian minister briefed the Special Representative of the Secretary-General on the developments of the constitutional track in Libya in light of the meetings hosted by Cairo during the last period, stressing the importance of successfully concluding this track under the auspices of the UN mission, in preparation for holding legislative and presidential elections simultaneously without delay.

In this context, Minister Shukri stressed – according to Abu Zeid – the need for some external parties to stop attempts to adapt the political process in Libya according to their interests, as the responsibility imposes on all Libyan partners to provide support to the Libyan brothers to reach the required consensus on their own and by their own will, as it must Not allowing any party inside Libya to hijack the political process through the policy of imposing a fait accompli.

It is noteworthy that many international powers and regional countries are intervening in the Libyan affairs and support the parties to the Libyan conflict, according to their own agendas and interests, and confrontations are raging at times overtly and secretly at other times, privately between Egypt and Turkey over the Libyan resources and reconstruction projects.

For his part, “Batili” explained, according to the same source, that the UN support mission in Libya assured all parties that the key to the solution lies in the hands of the Libyans, and that he always advises all parties with whom he talks about the need to show flexibility towards the few remaining issues in the constitutional track.

Abu Zeid added that the Egyptian Foreign Minister and the representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations also agreed on “the importance of the role of the United Nations in Libya due to the confidence it enjoys and its impartiality, and then the necessity of continuing channels of communication and coordination between Egypt and the United Nations to support the brothers in Libya to reach the required consensus on The course of the political process in a way that guarantees the simultaneous holding of presidential and parliamentary elections, and the exit of all foreign forces, mercenaries and foreign fighters from Libya within a specified time frame without delay, in implementation of Security Council resolutions.
