Tripoli: Libya's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Taher Al-Sunni, has voiced the frustrations of his fellow citizens, highlighting their exhaustion from years of suffering and ineffective UN sessions that fail to produce tangible outcomes.

According to Libyan News Agency, during a Security Council session addressing the situation in Libya, Al-Sunni emphasized the need for these discussions to be driven by genuine intentions to break the ongoing cycle of political stagnation. He urged for concrete measures that align with Libyans' aspirations for stability, advocating for national initiatives and dialogues that prioritize free and fair elections to end transitional phases.

Al-Sunni welcomed international efforts that bolster national dialogue and aim to resolve divisions, emphasizing that these must be Libyan-led and complement the UN framework while adhering to political agreements and Security Council resolutions. He called for the transformation of Libyan ownership of the political process from a slogan into a reality, urging the international community to support rather than replace national will, thereby respecting the Libyan people's right to shape their future.

The representative highlighted the pressing need to address public spending issues to protect the Libyan dinar and safeguard the nation's resources. He expressed concern over the lack of implementation of a unified spending agreement, signed nine months ago, and criticized the ongoing challenges and lack of commitment to its outcomes.

Al-Sunni also emphasized the importance of maintaining the Central Bank of Libya's independence and highlighted the deterioration of basic services and the cost-of-living crisis, linking them to corruption and oil smuggling. He criticized the international community's selective action against oil smuggling and called for decisive measures against all involved in such crimes.

Additionally, Al-Sunni praised the Sanctions Committee's guidance note allowing the Libyan Investment Authority to reinvest frozen assets while ensuring their protection. He concluded by urging support for military dialogue and joint security meetings across Libya to prevent a return to armed conflict, underscoring the heavy toll already paid by the Libyan people.
