Tripoli: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Government of National Unity has issued a call to all citizens to avoid actions targeting the headquarters and properties of international missions. This appeal emphasizes the importance of safeguarding the premises, vehicles, and personnel of international organizations, UN agencies, and diplomatic and consular missions within the country.
According to Libyan News Agency, the Ministry's statement, released on Tuesday, asserts that freedom of expression and peaceful protest should not lead to acts of storming, vandalism, or threats, which could endanger the safety of individuals. The Ministry has urged citizens to address grievances through appropriate authorities and assured that it is closely monitoring any attempts to target international entities in Libya.
The statement further highlighted that these international facilities and personnel are protected under national and international legal frameworks. The Ministry cited several legal documents that underscore this protection, including Articles 104 and 105 of the UN Charter, the 1946 Convention on the Privileges and Immunities of the United Nations, and the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, alongside Libyan national laws. In instances of legal breaches, incidents are referred to the Public Prosecutor's Office for necessary legal action.
The Ministry also reaffirmed the Government of National Unity's dedication to safeguarding these international missions and ensuring their security in collaboration with national authorities. This commitment reflects Libya's adherence to international law, its obligations, and the importance of maintaining positive relations with the international community.
