Tripoli: The Government of National Unity has announced a three-day period of national mourning following the tragic death of the Chief of the General Staff of the Libyan Army, Lieutenant General Mohammed Al-Haddad, and his companions in a plane crash. During this period, flags will be flown at half-staff across all state institutions, and official ceremonies will be suspended as a mark of respect.
According to Libyan News Agency, the government released a statement late Tuesday night, mourning the loss of Lieutenant General Mohammed Al-Haddad, along with Lieutenant General Al-Fitouri Ghraibil, Chief of Staff of the Ground Forces; Brigadier General Mahmoud Al-Qatawi, Director of the Military Manufacturing Authority; Mr. Mohammed Al-Asawi Diab, Advisor to the Chief of the General Staff; and Mr. Mohammed Omar Ahmed Mahjoub, photographer at the General Staff Media Office, all of whom perished in the crash while returning from an official mission to Turkey.
The statement emphasized the significant loss to the nation, highlighting the dedication and loyalty of these individuals to the Libyan military and state. The government extended its condolences to the bereaved families and colleagues within the armed forces, acknowledging the contributions made by the deceased to Libya's military establishment.
In response to the incident, the Prime Minister has tasked the Ministry of Defense with sending an official delegation to Ankara. This team will investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash, engage with Turkish authorities, and ensure that all necessary measures and investigations are conducted in accordance with established protocols.
