Tripoli: The Civil Society Commission has firmly rejected any efforts to resettle irregular migrants in Libya, emphasizing that the nation’s demographic stability is a non-negotiable aspect of its national security. The Commission highlighted that both internal and external pressures to resettle migrants under the guise of defending rights and freedoms, while opposing hate speech or racial discrimination, will not be tolerated.
According to Libyan News Agency, the Commission issued a statement on Sunday expressing its vigilance over reports in local and international media about certain countries and foreign organizations seeking to exploit Libya’s political division to resettle and integrate irregular migrants into Libyan society. The Commission has observed multiple reactions from various parties involved in the Libyan issue, including civil society organizations, which have disseminated false information threatening national security.
The Commission has called for adherence to international human rights conventions and the avoidance of hate speech and discrimination. It stressed the importance of not applying double standards by any party and reaffirmed its commitment to upholding international agreements. In its statement, the Commission condemned attempts by local and international entities to enforce the resettlement of irregular migrants in Libya, urging compliance with Libyan laws and international covenants, particularly Article 22 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
The Commission advocated for addressing illegal migration by improving conditions in the migrants’ countries of origin, such as enhancing livelihood opportunities. It urged foreign nations, especially European ones, to provide Libyan agencies with necessary resources, including advanced surveillance technologies, to strengthen border control efforts. The statement warned against complacency in addressing illegal migration, citing the involvement of terrorist and criminal groups in migrant smuggling, which exacerbates crime rates. The Commission emphasized the need to educate Libyan society about the risks associated with illegal migration and the tactics used by smugglers, while also cautioning against the infiltration of terrorist groups.
Concluding its statement, the Commission warned civil society organizations against promoting the resettlement of irregular migrants in Libya, stating that legal actions would be pursued against any violators.
