Tripoli: The Ministry of Health of the Government of National Unity has taken a significant step by adopting a new policy aimed at enhancing midwifery and nursing services in Libya. The Acting Minister of Health, Mohamed Al-Ghouj, has approved the ‘National Policy for Midwifery and Nursing Services in Libya,’ marking the first national effort to regulate and develop these professions on a national scale.
According to Libyan News Agency, this newly adopted policy provides a framework for strategic interventions concerning nursing and midwifery. It includes specific implementation mechanisms and institutional frameworks, all supported by budgets. The objective is to address existing shortcomings and build on strengths through well-defined implementation steps.
The Ministry of Health highlighted that the policy’s development was informed by comprehensive analyses of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and challenges. The process was guided by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, with a particular focus on Goal 3, which targets health and well-being.
The primary aim of the national policy is to bolster leadership within the nursing and midwifery sectors across public policy, academic institutions, and clinical practice. Additionally, it seeks to realign these professions with international standards to ensure the delivery of high-quality and efficient healthcare services throughout the health system.
Rima Ezz El-Din, the Director of the Nursing Department at the Ministry, emphasized the importance of this policy as the first national framework of its kind. She stated that it marks a new phase in the development of nursing and midwifery professions, reinforcing their role as a crucial component in achieving quality healthcare services. She added, “This signing is not merely an administrative procedure, but a national commitment to empowering nurses and midwives, protecting the profession, and improving the quality of healthcare in Libya.”
