Amman: Under its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP), the government of Japan provided a $65,677 grant to the Jordan Medical Aid For Palestinians (MAP) society to send medical equipment for the Marka refugee camp.

According to a statement released by MAP on Monday, the contract was signed by Japanese ambassador Okuyama Jiro and Chairman of MAP Michael Sayegh.

It said the grant will improve service quality of its medical center in the Marka camp (locally known as Hittin Camp) by providing x-ray, electrocardiography, and electromyography devices.

Sayegh said MAP will continue providing laboratory equipment and supporting clinics of its medical centers to offer the best services, expressing appreciation for Japan’s constant support.

For his part, Jiro said a neurology department can be established and more comprehensive services will be provided, thanks to the new equipment, limiting financial burdens on patients who need to be transferred outside the camp due to lack of equipment and health insurance.

Since 1993, the government of Japan provided more than $10 million in support for 157 projects of Jordanian non-governmental organizations, schools, hospitals, and municipalities.

MAP has been providing primary health care since 1990 through clinics in Palestinian refugee camps in Jordan. To date, it has been able to treat more than 1,950,000 patients.
