Tripoli: The Defense and National Security Committee of the House of Representatives (HoR) has strongly rejected and condemned the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) for signing a roadmap funding agreement with the Qatari government. The committee criticized the agreement as a “serious violation of the principles of neutrality and professionalism” that the mission is expected to uphold in its dealings with Libyan affairs.
According to Libyan News Agency, the official spokesperson for the HoR, Abdullah Blihaq, shared a statement on his Facebook page where the committee expressed that this measure represents interference in national sovereignty. They emphasized their “condemnation of attempts to internationalize the Libyan crisis through suspicious tools seeking to impose foreign agendas that contradict the interests of the Libyan people and their aspirations for stability and sovereignty.”
The committee also voiced its surprise at the involvement of a foreign country in funding a political process intended to be Libyan-led. It warned of “the serious repercussions of this step and the threat it poses to the political process and the undermining of opportunities for a real solution.”
Further, the Committee declared its full support for the statement issued by the Prime Minister of the HoR regarding the cessation of dealings with the UN mission. It called for “a comprehensive review of the mission’s role in Libya, including a reassessment of its continued presence should it continue to exceed its mandate and show bias towards a political party at the expense of the national interest.”
