Tripoli: The Prime Minister of the Government of National Unity, Abdul Hamid Dbaiba, emphasized the urgent need for Libya to address the growing threat posed by gangs and armed groups involved in irregular migration and human smuggling. He highlighted that these activities pose significant threats to both local and international security during an international ministerial meeting in Tripoli attended by various European and international representatives.

According to Libyan News Agency, Dbaiba announced that the government has tasked the Ministry of Interior with developing a comprehensive national plan to tackle migration issues. This plan is designed in cooperation with international partners, aiming for sustainable solutions. The Prime Minister also mentioned the upcoming launch of a large-scale national campaign with support from several countries to dismantle smuggling networks and enhance border control.

Dbaiba stressed that the migration challenge is intertwined with broader security issues and that progress in establishing state authority will aid in controlling borders and reducing illegal activities. He outlined the government’s vision, which includes building institutions that respect sovereignty and human dignity, and called for international partnerships based on mutual respect and shared responsibilities.

The acting Minister of Interior, Major General Imad Trabelsi, stated that Libya’s plan includes increasing voluntary repatriation and deportation of those who entered the country illegally. He noted that between three and four million irregular migrants are currently in Libya and emphasized the need for international cooperation. Trabelsi expressed the government’s desire to sign an agreement with the European Union to manage migration issues effectively, ensuring stability in Libya and the region.
