Britain announces the interception of two Russian bombers in northern Scotland

Britain announced that its Typhoon fighter jets intercepted two Russian bombers while they were patrolling in international airspace north of Scotland, today, Monday, within the borders of the northern air zone under the control of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

British Armed Forces Minister James Heppey said: "Typhoon pilots took off to intercept two long-range Russian bombers this morning and followed them as they flew north of the Shetland Islands, preparing for any potential threat to the UK mainland."

Britain added that it routinely sends its fighters to such situations to secure and protect the country's airspace.

It stated that a number of British pilots recently led a NATO air security mission in Estonia, during which they conducted more than 50 aircraft interception operations.
