Addis ababa: The African Union (AU) and the United Nations (UN) have reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing joint efforts in promoting peace, security, stability, and sustainable development across the Great Lakes region. This pledge was made during a meeting held in Addis Ababa between Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, and senior UN officials.
According to Libyan News Agency, the meeting was attended by James Swan, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Congo and Head of the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the country (MONUSCO), along with Huang Xia, the UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for the Great Lakes region. Discussions focused on recent developments in eastern Congo and the broader security and political situation in the Great Lakes region.
The participants exchanged views on the pressing challenges facing the region and explored ways to bolster regional stability. They underscored the significance of sustained AU-UN coordination to support initiatives that aim to achieve peace, reinforce security, and create sustainable development opportunities for the region's residents.
