The Arab League has welcomed the resolution of the 53rd session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, held in Geneva, on "addressing religious hatred that constitutes incitement to discrimination, hostility or violence,".

League of Arab States Ahmed Abul Gheit commended the resolution which reaffirmed the responsibility that rests on All parties to publicly denounce advocacy of religious hatred, including the desecration of sacred books, and to explore ways to prosecute perpetrators.

Abul Gheit had condemned in the strongest terms the Swedish authorities' allowing the burning of a copy of the Holy Qur'an by extremists on the first day of Eid al-Adha, and held them responsible for confronting such acts firmly.

He also called on all countries to adopt the resolution and work to confront the escalation of waves of hatred between peoples and followers of different religions.

He urged countries to review some of their laws and policies that do not address religious hatred with due firmness, and working to prosecute perpetrators of hate crimes and incitement and take immediate steps to bridge legal loopholes in this regard.
