Ambassador Nicola Orlando: Strengthening International Unity

Tripoli: The Head of the European Union Delegation to Libya, Ambassador Nicola Orlando, emphasized the importance of the upcoming meeting of the International Follow-Up Committee of the Berlin Process as a pivotal step in strengthening international unity, while underscoring that leadership must come from Libyan citizens themselves.

According to Libyan News Agency, this statement was shared in a tweet by Ambassador Orlando, published by the European Union Delegation. The tweet highlighted his engagement with ambassadors and charg©s d’affaires from various nations in a discussion hosted by Presidential Council members Abdullah al-Lafi and Musa al-Koni. The focus of the discussion was on advancing the political process in Libya in anticipation of the forthcoming meeting of the International Follow-Up Committee of the Berlin Process.

Ambassador Orlando stressed the unifying role of the Presidency Council and reiterated the European Union’s support for the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Libya, Hanna Tetteh, as well as the efforts of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL). He emphasized the need to relaunch a Libyan-led process based on the proposals from the Advisory Commission.

He further urged all stakeholders to shun unilateral actions and to actively engage in the UN-facilitated process aimed at achieving national elections and renewing legitimacy, considering the fragile security environment and the deep divisions impacting Libyans.

Ambassador Orlando reiterated that the Berlin meeting would be crucial for strengthening international unity; however, he maintained that the ultimate leadership responsibility lies with the Libyans themselves.

Concluding his remarks, the Head of the European Union Delegation encouraged all Libyan citizens to participate in the public survey conducted by UNSMIL to ensure their voices are heard.
