New york: Libya’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Taher Al-Sunni, addressed the UN Security Council to emphasize the urgent need for a definitive end to the Libyan crisis. He called for a clear UN plan with a specific timetable that ensures genuine representation of all political forces, aiming to eliminate divisions and foreign interference within the country.

According to Libyan News Agency, Al-Sunni began his speech by acknowledging the anticipation surrounding the progress of the announced UN plan and the commencement of the political process. He noted the eagerness of Libyan citizens for concrete outcomes that would break the persistent “vicious cycle” that has gripped the nation for years.

Ambassador Al-Sunni highlighted the importance of responsible engagement from both internal and external parties to support national efforts aimed at achieving stability and establishing a state governed by the rule of law. He asserted that the success of UN mediation hinges on delivering
clear results and ensuring the inclusion of all active forces in the dialogue.

Al-Sunni articulated the desires of the Libyan populace, advocating for an end to transitional phases and division, and the freedom to elect their representatives without dictatorial influence. He envisioned a unified civil state under a permanent constitution, with a peaceful transition of power and adherence to national legislation.

The ambassador called for a robust economy, accessible basic services, and transparent partnerships free from corruption and foreign domination. He emphasized the need for real security, with a national army that curtails militia influence and foreign presence, along with justice and accountability to end impunity and achieve national reconciliation.

Addressing the Security Council, Al-Sunni posed a critical question about their guarantees for fulfilling these demands. He urged that if progress remains elusive, the Libyan people should be allowed to manage their own affairs, free from international
constraints.

In his concluding remarks, Al-Sunni reiterated Libya’s openness to global engagement, conditional upon respect for its sovereignty. He called for prioritizing Libya in global peace initiatives to focus on constructive efforts rather than conflict, underscoring the nation’s willingness to collaborate based on equality and sovereignty.
