Benghazi: Alitalia has inaugurated its first flights to Benghazi since 2011, with Benina International Airport receiving the first direct commercial flight from Rome, marking the official resumption of air travel between Benghazi and Rome after a 13-year hiatus.

According to Libyan News Agency, the Libyan Development and Reconstruction Fund celebrated this milestone on its official Facebook page, describing it as “one of the most notable achievements in the air transport between Libya and Europe.” This development is part of a strategic plan overseen by the Fund to enhance Libya’s connectivity with Europe.

Belgassem Haftar, Director General of the Fund, expressed that the reopening of this air route signifies a “qualitative shift” aimed at rebuilding Libya’s infrastructure and revitalizing international partnerships. He emphasized that this was the outcome of a series of meetings with Italian officials and representatives from major Italian companies.

Haftar highlighted that the re-establishment of this
route is a significant step for the return of international businesses to Libya, thereby contributing to comprehensive development efforts and boosting various economic and service sectors.

The inaugural flight included notable passengers such as the Italian Consul, the head of the Italian Chamber of Commerce, and over 100 representatives from major Italian firms. They are set to participate in the Libyan-Italian Forum for Development and Reconstruction, which will be held in Benghazi with extensive participation from businessmen and investors.
