Baghdad: Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani has underscored the critical importance of women’s active participation in Iraq’s political landscape, particularly with the upcoming elections in focus.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, during a meeting with female activists and representatives of civil society organizations, Al-Sudani highlighted the integral role of civil society organizations in Iraq’s democratic framework. He assured government support for these organizations, especially those monitoring women’s affairs, as they are considered key partners in implementing initiatives to enhance women’s roles in society. Al-Sudani clarified that the advancement of women’s status goes beyond the efforts of the Supreme Council for Women’s Affairs, extending to women’s effective role in societal development.
The Prime Minister also addressed the tragic case of the late Dr. Ban Ziad, emphasizing the government’s commitment to following up on the incident. He noted that the Ministries of Interior and Health are actively investigating, with findings submitted to the judiciary for a decision by the Basra Court. Al-Sudani reiterated the government’s dedication to protecting women and cautioned against succumbing to harmful rumors or actions that could disrupt social harmony.
Further, Al-Sudani expressed support for organizations focused on empowering women through employment and economic initiatives, aligning with the government’s broader economic reform agenda. He proposed the establishment of a fund to support women’s projects and organizations, reinforcing the need for these groups to collaborate with state authorities while preserving societal values.
As Iraq approaches its elections, Al-Sudani directed attention to the significance of women’s participation and the importance of monitoring female candidates’ affairs to ensure their effective involvement in the political process.
