Tripoli: The National Economic and Social Development Council, in cooperation with the Islamic Organization for Food Security, organized an event to review and discuss the results and outputs of the Food Security Project in Libya. The event saw the participation of national entities and institutions, alongside representatives from relevant international organizations and institutions.
According to Libyan News Agency, the event, which took place in Tripoli, included attendees such as a representative from the Ministry of Finance, a representative from the Islamic Development Bank, and the Assistant Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) for the Near East and North Africa Region. Additionally, the Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Libya, representatives from the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), and the African Development Bank participated. The Head of the Programs Department at the Islamic Organization for Food Security joined via Zoom.
The discussions at the event focused on the project's key outputs, which included the Executive Report on Activating the National Model for Food Security Emergency Response in Libya, and the Executive Report on the Methodological Framework for Designing a Healthy Food Basket Based on the Cost of a Healthy Diet.
Participants deliberated on how these outputs align with national priorities and needs, and explored mechanisms for utilizing them effectively. They also examined ways to improve coordination and cooperation between national entities and international organizations, drawing on technical expertise and international best practices to develop Libya's food security system.
The necessity of transitioning from study preparation to practical implementation was highlighted, with emphasis on turning project outputs into actionable measures and programs. This transition is expected to enhance national food security policies, aid in responding to food emergencies, and improve citizens' access to healthy and sustainable diets.
The event underscored the significance of partnership and coordination between national and international bodies to support food security and maximize the benefits of technical and international cooperation aligned with Libya's national priorities and sustainable development goals.
The initiative is part of the Council's efforts to bolster Libya's food security system, benefiting from a technical grant provided by the Islamic Development Bank through the Ministry of Finance and implemented in collaboration with the Islamic Organization for Food Security. It aims to support the development of national policies and programs and strengthen national institutions' capacity to tackle food security challenges.
