Tripoli: The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has expressed its approval of the High National Elections Commission’s (HNEC) announcement regarding the preliminary results for municipal council elections in 26 municipalities located in the Western region.
According to Libyan News Agency, UNSMIL has urged all involved parties to accept the voting outcomes peacefully and to utilize judicial mechanisms to address any disputes. This statement follows the recent polling activities in seven municipalities, which proceeded despite a destructive arson attack on the HNEC warehouse in the Zawiyah field office the previous week.
The Mission has encouraged registered voters in the areas of Zawiyah Markaz, Zawiyah Wassat, Zawiyah Gharb, Zawiyah Chamal, Sabrata, Sormane, and Bir Ghnam to actively engage in these crucial elections by casting their votes and selecting their representatives.
UNSMIL has reiterated its call for the House of Representatives (HoR)-appointed government to eliminate any barriers obstructing the electoral process. They emphasize the urgent need to continue elections in municipalities where proceedings were paused, thereby ensuring that all Libyan citizens can participate in shaping their local governance and exercising their political rights.
The Mission underscored the significance of holding elections to foster trust and accountability between the citizens and their local leaders.
