Tripoli: The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has expressed approval following the announcement of preliminary election results for 26 municipalities in Libya’s western region. The announcement was made by the High National Elections Commission, and UNSMIL has urged all parties involved to accept these results peacefully.
According to Libyan News Agency, the Mission emphasized the importance of resorting to judicial mechanisms in the event of any objections to the results. Additionally, UNSMIL acknowledged the continuation of voting in seven municipalities today, despite a recent arson attack on the Commission’s warehouse in the Zawiya field office.
The Mission has encouraged all registered voters to actively participate in the electoral process by casting their votes in the municipalities of Zawiya Central, Zawiya West, Zawiya North, Sabratha, Surman, and Bir al-Ghanam. UNSMIL has reiterated its call to the government appointed by the House of Representatives to remove any obstacles hindering the electoral process, allowing all citizens the opportunity to exercise their political rights.
UNSMIL noted that the successful conduct of elections serves to enhance confidence-building and accountability between citizens and their local leaders, emphasizing the importance of these democratic processes in Libya.
