Tripoli, The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) condemned the closure of the eastern line of the Man-made River by an armed group, which poses a threat to the water security of millions of Libyans, and warns of a humanitarian crisis.

In a statement, the UN mission called on all actors to give priority to the country’s supreme interest to ensure the immediate resumption of water supplies and to respect and protect its infrastructure, considering these acts a form of collective punishment of citizens, and all perpetrators must be prosecuted with the maximum penalty permitted by law.

She said, “The obstruction of infrastructure such as the man-made river is a violation of international human rights law, which should be condemned, especially when it is used for blackmail in order to obtain political gains.”

The UN mission reiterated that access to water and water supplies should not be politicized, calling on all actors to give priority to the best interest of the country and the interest of all Libyans to ensure the immediate resumption of water supplies and the respect and protection of its infrastructure.
