Tripoli: The United Nations has reiterated its steadfast commitment to supporting women’s rights in Libya. This announcement was made in a statement by Ms. Tetteh, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Libya, coinciding with the launch of the ’16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence’ campaign.
According to Libyan News Agency, Ms. Tetteh’s statement underscored the necessity of ongoing efforts in Libya to combat violence against women. She called for the closing of existing legal gaps and aligning national legislation with international standards. Ms. Tetteh also emphasized the importance of adopting a draft law aimed at protecting women from violence, which was developed by Libyan experts.
In her concluding remarks, Ms. Tetteh reinforced that the safety, dignity, and freedom of expression of women are fundamental human rights and a collective national responsibility. She stated that the protection and empowerment of Libyan women are essential to building a society where all citizens can equally contribute to achieving peace, enhancing stability, and shaping the future of Libya.
