Tripoli: The UN is ready to support efforts to build an effective model for sustainable development in Libya, as affirmed by Aeneas Chuma, the UN Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Acting Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Libya.
According to Libyan News Agency, this commitment was expressed during a meeting conducted by the National Committee for Sustainable Development of the House of Representatives (HoR) with Chuma. The meeting, highlighted by a statement from HoR Spokesperson Abdullah Blehaq, underscored the United Nations’ readiness to support Libya’s national efforts in constructing a sustainable development framework.
Chuma expressed approval for the committee’s initiatives, notably in capacity building, legislative development, and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. He commended the HoR for establishing a national committee focused on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The meeting, chaired by Committee Chair Rabia Abu Ras and attended by the Vice Chair of the Finance Committee Mahdi Al-Awar, along with several technical team members, outlined the Committee’s vision and work plan. It also reviewed national priorities aligned with the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals and Africa’s Agenda 2063.
Discussions during the meeting revolved around potential joint cooperation between the Committee and the UN system in Libya. The focus was on coordinating efforts and activating institutional partnerships in areas like analysis and policies, legislation, data and reports, partnerships and financing, and strategic communication.
Abu Ras emphasized that this meeting marks a new beginning for a practical and sustainable partnership with the UN. This collaboration is expected to enhance the HoR’s role in leading a development process that is just, responsive, and meets the needs of all Libyans.
