UN Official Stresses Importance of Audit Bureau’s Independence in Libya

Tripoli: The Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Libya has underscored the need to uphold the independence and impartiality of the Audit Bureau.

According to Libyan News Agency, Ulrika Richardson, who also serves as the Resident Coordinator of the United Nations, emphasized the critical role of the Audit Bureau in enhancing oversight and ensuring the transparency and objectivity of its reports.

This statement was made during a meeting in Tripoli with Khaled Shakshak, Head of the Audit Bureau, alongside a delegation from the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL). Richardson highlighted the Audit Bureau’s essential contribution to maintaining effective oversight of public funds, promoting transparency, and fighting corruption. These elements are considered crucial for fostering stability and building robust institutions in Libya.

Khaled Shakshak briefed Richardson on the Bureau’s efforts to enhance oversight of public funds while upholding transparency, accountability, and anti-corruption measures. The meeting also covered the agreement between the Libyan Audit Bureau and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), which marks a significant move towards boosting cooperation in technical support and capacity building, as well as monitoring development projects in Libya.

The discussions concluded with both parties stressing the necessity of aligning development projects with national priorities. They agreed to collaborate on establishing effective mechanisms to ensure that development initiatives yield the maximum return on both institutional and service levels.
