UN Mission Urges Libyan Community Involvement in Shaping Nation’s Future

Tripoli: The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has called upon civil society organizations and community leaders to spearhead public consultations nationwide. These consultations aim to empower Libyans to contribute to crafting a unified national vision, fostering effective institutions and enduring stability.

According to Libyan News Agency, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General, Hanna Tetteh, emphasized that the process of structured dialogue should not be dictated by the UN but should involve Libyans collaborating to discover common solutions. She highlighted that all citizens play a vital role in shaping the nation’s future. The Mission supports community consultations and discussions, allowing individuals to share their ideas. The outcomes of these discussions will be shared with members of the structured dialogue and made public.

The Mission’s official page outlined a practical guide that includes four main tracks: governance, the economy, security, and national reconcilia
tion and human rights. It offers integrated tools such as thematic summaries, presentations, and a facilitator’s guide to ensure effective consultations involving local communities, municipalities, and civil society organizations.

Facilitators are urged to collect and submit recommendations and ideas via the designated online platform promptly after concluding consultations, or by mid-May at the latest, enabling members of the structured dialogue to incorporate them into their final report.

Approximately 6,000 Libyans participated in the online “Give Your Opinion” survey, with results presented during April discussions. Additional participation opportunities were offered through monthly digital sessions with mission leadership and the digital youth platform, further supporting community engagement.

This initiative aligns with UNSMIL’s mandate to facilitate an inclusive, Libyan-led political process, support consensus-building for national elections, unify and strengthen state institutions, and achieve sust
ainable stability.
