Tripoli: The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) announced that while the laws drafted by the 6+6 Committee represent a significant step forward, they contain loopholes that could potentially invalidate voters’ choices.
According to Libyan News Agency, UNSMIL highlighted that the results of the legislative elections are currently contingent upon the success of the presidential elections. This means that if the presidential elections are not held for any reason, the legislative elections would also be rendered null and void, regardless of whether they have already occurred.
The mission further explained that if both presidential and legislative elections are conducted, any contestation of the presidential election results would directly impact the legitimacy of the legislative elections. UNSMIL noted that such a linkage is legally unnecessary and undermines the voters’ intentions.
The Advisory Committee underscored the importance of amending the electoral framework to resolve these contentious issues, suggesting the decoupling of presidential and legislative election results as crucial for electoral success.
According to the mission, a survey by UNSMIL found that more than 80 percent of participants agreed with this recommendation.
